What Are Standard Flagging Operations?

Standard flagging safely alternates traffic through a single lane using stop/slow paddles and clear communication by trained traffic control professionals. While we call it “standard,” no two work zones are the same, and each temporary traffic control setup is tailored to site conditions, speed, visibility, and schedule to keep people protected and projects moving forward.

Our Approach to Safety and Compliance

We set high standards across every aspect of work zone safety—because safe, effective, compliant operations are critical to protecting people and keeping projects on schedule. Our crews are trained to meet or exceed MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) and state DOT requirements, applying the right approach for each site, speed, and schedule.

This includes:

  • Visibility First: Crews wear industry-leading yellow safety gear so motorists see them clearly in active work zone traffic control environments.
  • Technology that Enables People: Real-time comms, location tools, and in-cab video support safer decisions.
  • Clear, Courteous Communication: Crews keep partners informed and traffic flowing with respectful, clear direction.
  • Rigorous, Role-Based Training: Onboarding, field coaching, and FF Learn microlearning reinforce safe habits.
  • Field Leadership & Accountability: Leaders set expectations; teammates speak up and look out for one another.
